Film editing has always been the backbone in the art of movie making. The process requires a lot of creativity, hard-work, improvisation and team management to produce the final output which is viewed by millions. Very few people make breakthroughs and gain recognitions for their extensive talents and Indian film editor Shangeeth Sathyanathan is one of them. He is already a teenage inspiration to the people in this field of work. His excellence in film editing precedes his background, being the nephew of Allirajah Subaskaran, Chairman of Lyca Group of companies.
Shangeeth’s first breakthrough was in the movie Vettai in the year 2012 – which was a complete entertainer and received a lot of positive reviews and attention in the Tamil film industry. Subsequently he would go on to collaborate with many award winning directors like Shankar, K.S. Ravikumar, Maniratnam, A.R. Murugadoss, Gautham Menon and so on. His career skyrocketed in the year 2014 with the film Kaththi where he worked under the able guidance of Sreekar Prasad.
One of his notable works is none other than Superstar Rajinikanth’s 2.0 directed by Shankar in 2018. The movie is touted to be the most expensive movie in India and one of the highest grossing movies in its first week of initial release in the world. The film is the first in Indian cinema to be natively shot in 3D, which was done by cinematographer Nirav Shah. 2.0 was released worldwide in both 3D and conventional format along with its dubbed versions in Hindi and Telugu. The movie received positive reviews upon release. The film crossed 400 crore rupees in its opening weekend to emerge as the highest-grossing film worldwide for that week. Shangeeth’s work in this movie was highly praised particularly for its breathtaking visual effects and meticulous editing which paved way for his entry into the Bollywood sector of Indian Cinema.
Entering into the field at a tender age of 15, Shangeeth has worked on more than 100 movies and has bagged a plethora of awards. His achievements include winning the Best Editor award at the 60th Filmfare awards, Best Editor at SIIMA Awards, IIFA awards and many more.
Apart from his talent of editing for feature films, Shangeeth has marked his presence in the television industry by working with popular Indian television channels such as Network 18 Group, Sun Network, STAR India, Viacom18 Network, Sun Direct, Zee Entertainment Enterprises and Sony Entertainment Televisions. He is seen as one of the finest film editors ever produced by the Tamil film industry.
