Based on a folk tale, this socially relevant drama follows the fluctuating fortunes in the life of Achin, any young man who works as a servant for an affluent family. His employer is a wealthy land owner or zamindar by the name Rai Saheb, who is a cruel and exploitative man.
When Rai Saheb's mentally deranged son commits murder, he implicates Achin, and uses all his power and position to frame him for a crime he did not commit. Forced by this horrifying circumstance to become a fugitive of the law, Achin takes shelter in a quiet, pristine island. Here, he falls in love with Pakhi, the daughter of a fisherman.
Desperate to protect his son, Rai Saheb hunts him down and as revenge for Achin's disobedience, he makes arrangements for Pakhi's marriage with his own son.
Late one night, Achin tries to meet Pakhi, only to find himself pounced upon by the police, arrested and placed behind bars. Meanwhile, Pakhi is married to Rai Saheb's son and is informed that Achin would soon be hanged. Finally, Achin is released due to lack of evidence. He returns home in the hope that he could reunite with Pakhi, but tragically, learns that the heartbroken Pakhi has committed suicide.
