This evocative romantic drama revolves around Dhanalakshmi a.k.a. Dhana (Sneha Ullal), the only daughter of an exceptionally wealthy man. However, after the death of her mother, her father remarries and Dhana is neglected and abused. To add to her woes, Dhana's father passes away and she is left all alone in the world despite being the heir of a vast inheritance.
Her evil stepmother is keen to get her hands on Dhana's wealth and forces her to marry against her will. Left with no other option, Dhana escapes and takes shelter in her friend's house in Hyderabad. Aravind (Yasho Sagar), the son of a garage owner, is a vagabond. He comes across Dhana and loses his heart to her.
However, Dhana's whereabouts as soon discovered by her stepmother and just as she is about to get captured, Aravind rescues her with the help of the police. Subsequently, they become friendly and she shares with him details about her childhood. She also reveals that she is in love with her childhood friend, Balaji and could never think of being in a relationship with anyone else.
Dejected by her rejection, Aravind decides to leave for Kolkata in search of a job. At the same time, Dhana comes to know that Balaji is also there and due to unexpected circumstances, they end up travelling together. Aravind helps her overcome terrible obstacles in order to find Balaji. Will he succeed in helping Balaji and Dhana reunite? Does Balaji really exist? How long will Dhana be able to successfully escape from her step-mother? Will Dhana ever appreciate and reciprocate Aravind's true love?
This movie was remade into Kannada as Ullasa Utsaha (2009). It was also dubbed into Malayalam as 'Ayyo Pavam' and in Hindi as 'Baazi Pyaar Ki'.
