Aman Hyderabadi is a poor poet who among many competitors strives to make his mark. He meets a woman names Shabnam, who is Inspector Bahadur's daughter and falls in love with her. Shabnam's father disapproves of this, so Shabnam and Aman elope to another city and he changes his name intoKamal Lucknowi. Kamal plans to start his life with shabnam in a new place, and becomes a singer. However his voice is given away as an his identity as Police Inspector Shekhar who is his friend-tuned-foe plans to nab him and separate him and Shabnam.
Unlike most Indian movies, the song and dance does not occur randomly; instead it is an integral part of the story-line, which involves a poet and singer as well as poetry competitions that were once common.
The film was particularly popular for its Qawwali songs and was one of the biggest box office hits of the year.
