Set against the backdrop of a tumultuous period in Indian history, when princely families and wealthy landowners found their wealth, status and powers gradually being taken over by the government machinery, this evocative tale follows one such princely family's struggle to adapt to changing times. Bade Thakur (Shammi Kapoor) has three sons Devan (Vijayendra Ghatge), Vikram Singh (Vinod Khanna), and Rajendra Singh, a Police Officer (Mohsin Khan). While Devan is threatened by the eroding power of their family, his brothers, on the contrary, accept the change. Vikram even has a lowly peasant, Sumer Singh (Dharmendra) for a friend. But fate has something else in store for these two friends. Things come to such a boil that eventually Bade Thakur may have to decide to split the estate. How will this effect the relationships of the father and the sons? Will this impact on the friendship of Sumer and Vikram?
