Revealing Mistakes
At 1:30:22, when the Sheriff and his deputy are leaving Mr. Brooder, the troglodyte is clearly seen as breathing, even though he is already dead at that point

Factual Mistake
Nearing end of the movie when the captor attempts to shoot Hunt with Brooder's rifle, you can hear the hammer drop each time he pulls the trigger. This is not possible with a lever action rifle as the hammer is cocked by working the lever and chambering a round (as he later found out). Otherwise nothing would happen when trigger is pulled

Continuity
When O Dwyer sets off on foot, he is seen putting on his jacket. The next scene, he is without it, Later, he is seen with the jacket again

Continuity
During the sheriff's first hand to hand contact with the 'cave dwellers' he is thrown to the ground and his hat drops, brim first, close to his head on his right hand side. In subsequent shots it alternates between this position and being on his left, turned upside down

Continuity
David Arquette's teeth go back and forth from rotten and black to normal and white
Trivia:
Patrick Wilson and Zahn McClarnon star together in new 2015 season of the TV series ""Fargo." Patrick as a cop and Zahn as a henchman to a crime family

S Craig Zahler wrote the script in 2007

Michael Wincott was considered for the role of Buddy

In the opening scene between Buddy and Purvis, Purvis's teeth are straight and white. When Buddy and Purvis are walking up the trail they are white, then yellow/brown rotted then white again

This is the second 'David Arquette' Western involving canibalism. The first one was Ravenous

Before choosing Southern California, the producers considered the possibility of shooting the movie in New Mexico and Utah

After reading S. Craig Zahler's second novel called "Wraiths of the Broken Land" (2013), Kurt Russell stated that "Zahler's a fabulous story teller whose style catapults his reader into the turn of the century West with a ferocious sense of authenticity". The phrase is written on the back cover of the book

When the movie was officially announced in October 2012, Peter Sarsgaard and Jennifer Carpenter were set to play the O'Dwyers, while Timothy Olyphant was going to play John Brooder

Jim Broadbent replaced original cast member Richard Jenkins for a few months when the project was delayed. Jenkins was then recast in his role

The final movie represents the first draft of the script
