Mumbai-based builder, Parveen Dholakia, uses goon-power to force residents of Bhootachi Chawl to leave so that he can redevelop and profit. His plans are put on hold when he finds out that a resident, Rajaram Dhappne, has filed an FIR with the L.T. Marg Police Station. This news creates a stir amongst residents, who, along with his wife, Neelima, and son, Bandopanth, do not want any conflict with goons, and they approach Rajaram to try and get him to withdraw the complaint - but he denies filing any complaint. Fearful nevertheless, he decides to lay low, but is compelled to not only deal with his landlord, as he is behind on his rent, but also with a clay-bust of his now deceased step-grandfather, Abaji, who appears before him and asks him to put on his eye-glasses, read a book, and the main character he is reading about will manifest within him.
