In 1975 Madurai, notorious gangster Pandiyan aspires to be the first dark-skinned actor in Tamil cinema. He hires Ray Dasan, former assistant director to Satyajit Ray looking to make his directorial debut, to direct Pandyaa, a western set in Tamil Nadu, in the style of Clint Eastwood westerns. As the shooting progresses, Pandiyan's rivals begin to hunt him down, causing various problems to the shoot and himself.
