After having her parents killed by the Nazis in September of 1942, a 13-year-old Polish Jew Sara Guralnick escapes into the Ukrainian countryside where she steals her Christian best friend's identity. She seeks refuge in the village where she is taken in by a farmer and his young wife until she discovers the dark secrets of her employers' marriage and also tries to protect her true identity.
