This is an enlightening and educational tale of a a revolutionary history lecturer of a college. When Dr Selvam joins a college, it is completely overtaken by the tyrannical influence of a rich and spoiled student, Ramesh who controls all activities and ensures that nothing good can happen. However, Dr Selvam's out-of-the-box approach and transformational style of leadership, modifies Ramesh's behaviour, completely changing the atmosphere of the college. Will the college continued to flourish under Dr Selvam's leadership? Will Ramesh and the other students be able to continue their growth and progress peacefully even without the guidance of Dr Selvam? How will the impulsive youngsters react when they learn that Dr Selvam has a secret?

Trivia:
The music director of this movie, Mahesh Mahadevan, was diagnosed with blood cancer prior to signing this movie. It has been debated that Kamal Haasan's cancer-ridden, but intensely inspiring role in this movie was a tribute to Mahesh. Before his death in 2002, Mahesh went on to work in the sound department in Kamal Haasan's "Kuruthipunal" and "Aalavandhan", continuing to produce exemplary work till the end.

This movie marked the debut of noted singer, Srinivas.

Although it did not fare too well at the box office, this movie attained quite a bit of critical acclaim winning many awards. In 1995 at the National Film Awards, Nagesh was awarded Best Supporting Actor award for his portrayal in the film, and the movie also won the prestigious Tamil Nadu State Film Award Special Prize.

This movie was inspired from the Hollywood films "To Sir, With Love", "Class of 1984" and "Dead Poet's Society".
