The film is set in Amritsar of 1947, where a devout Sikh and prosperous businessman Gurmukh Singh (Prithviraj Kapoor) lives with his wife and younger brother, Prem. Trouble starts when Prem gets married to Ratan Kaur, as her brother Sukha creates differences between two brothers. This eventually leads to the closure of the business. However, Gurmukh never loses faith during the troubles times. Later, due of his sacrifice and perseverance, harmony is re-established in the family.
The music is composed by S. Mohinder, is noted for the song "Re mann Aiso Karr" and also earned him a 1970 National Film Award for Best Music Direction.
