In the first film, when Laine and Pete research Debbie's house online, the articles they find about the Zander family are dated 1952, the prequel takes place in 1967, which is fifteen years after the dates on the articles

The plot of the film is set in the 1960's as a prequel to the 2014 movie Ouija, the previous films stated that the supernatural events that killed Alice and Doris happened in the 40's or 50's.
