Rumors were that Darren Aronofsky was in talks to direct the movie in 2013 but he dropped in 2014.

In 2014 after Darren Aronofsky dropped David Fincher and Rooney Mara were in talks to direct and star in the film. But in 2015, it was reported that Francis Lawrence was in talks to direct the film.

Jennifer Lawrence was announced in the lead role with Francis Lawrence as the director in September 2015.

Matthews sold the film rights for a seven-figure sum before even the novel was finished.
