Where did you watch this movie?

True-crime writer Ellison Oswalt moves himself and his family into a house where a horrific crime took place earlier, but his family doesn't know. He is trying to find out more about the crime so he can write a new book about it to help his flailing career. He uses some "snuff" film footage he finds in the house to help in his research, but he soon finds more than he bargained for. There is a figure in each of the films, but who or what is it? As a result, his family start to suffer (as does he), and things take a turn for the worse. Will they survive?

When Ellison first wwatches the film of the family playing in the back yard, where some of the clips are missing the wooden steps nailed to the opposite side of the tree.

Ellison finds a scorpion in the attic of the house at first and later shown that the house is in Pennsylvania. While scorpions are mostly found in subtropical climates and are not native to Pennsylvania. And when Ellison mentions it to the deputy, he reacts as if it was a normal occurrence, rather than pointing out that it would have had to have been planted there.

Revealing Mistakes
In one of the last scenes, Ellison retrieves firewood from outdoors, where it is raining. He then proceeds to make a perfect, non-smokey fire. This is impossible given the humidity that would have seeped into the wood.
C Robert Cargill, writer of the film suddenly got an idea for the script from a nightmare he had after watching The Ring (2002).

Ethan Hawke who plays a writer role in the film, have written two novels in his real life namely "The Hottest State" (1996) and "Ash Wednesday" (2002).

The snake that is seen in the movie is a King snake, which is seen the non-poisonous snake by doing the rhyme, "Red on yellow, dangerous fellow. Red on black, friend of Jack."

Screenwriter C Robert Cargill once admitted that the name of Ethan Hawkes' character, Ellison Oswalt, was inspired by author Harlan Ellison and comedian Patton Oswalt.
