Busy doctor Rike embodies a typical Western model of happiness and success. She is educated, confident, determined and committed. Rike plans to spend her annual vacation fulfilling her long-held dream of sailing from Gibraltar to the small island of Ascension in the Atlantic. But her dream holiday is quickly broken off on the high seas, when, after a storm, she finds herself near a stricken fishing boat full of refugees. Knowing that at least a hundred people could drown, she begins to organize to help them. But when her efforts prove to be in vain, she is forced to make a momentous decision.
