When a young nun in Romania takes her own life, Father Burke, a priest with a haunted past and a novitiate on the threshold of her final vows are sent by the Vatican to investigate the mysterious death. Together they must uncover the order's unholy secret. Risking not only their lives but their faith and their very souls, they discover a malevolent force in the form of the same demonic nun.

After the "Demon Nun" from The Conjuring 2 which proved to be a popular horror antagonist, a spin-off focusing on the character was green-lit, making her the second character from the franchise to get her own feature.
"The Nun" was Valak's third appearance after The Conjuring 2 and Annabelle: Creation.
Taissa Farmiga, who played Sister Irene in this film, is the younger sister of Vera Farmiga in real life, who played Lorraine Warren in The Conjuring 1 and 2.
