This socially relevant tale evocatively depicts the plight of those with physical challenges in Indian society, through the life of Kamal Haasan and Sujatha who are deaf and mute. They meet and fall in love and later get married. The young couple live blissfully within their simple existence and in time are blessed with a child, but the child accidentally dies due to a petty thief Srikanth. Devastated Kamal and Sujatha's life again come back to normal after their second child is born. They invest all their love, care and resources in bringing up to him to be well educated. Ironically, it turns out that their son's employer, has a daughter who is also deaf and mute. Conflict arises in the family when the parents would like for their son to marry his employer's daughter, but he doesn't have the heart to fulfil such a relationship.
