At an idyllic school in rural USA, a new art instructor arrives from the city of New York. Her personality, her pain, her points of view are irreverent and different, sparking a conflict between her and the English teacher. The concept that 'words are lies, while only pictures represent the truth' sparks a competition in the school about which is greater, the power of the word vs the power of a picture. This rivalry ends up igniting a fiery relationship between the two, but more importantly it inspires the entire school to fight for their passionate English teacher who is about to be fired.

Trivia:
When Jack Marcus destroys his living room, the music in the background is David Bowie's "The Stars (Are Out Tonight)" from his album The Next Day. Clive Owen insisted on using this on the soundtrack rather than the classical music that director Fred Schepisi preferred.
