This film's story is based on the Egyptian myth "The Contendings of Horus and Set", where the gods Set and Horus battled for the rule of Egypt.

Filming occurred in the Australian desert, which served for the Sahara desert. It was considered to film in the Sahara itself but it was felt to be too dangerous.

While Set's armor appears to be based on a jackal, that particular animal is actually associated with the Egyptian god of the dead, Anubis. However, the so-called Set animal is canine and can (and often has) been mistaken for the Anubis jackal. The Set animal (or Sha) is unusual as it hasn't been identified as a modern animal. The "sha" is usually depicted as a slender dog, resembling a greyhound or a jackal, with three distinguishing features: a stiff tail, often forked at the end, which stands straight up or at an angle, whether the animal is sitting, standing, or walking; its ears, also held erect, are usually depicted as squarish or triangular, narrowest at the base and widest at the squarish tops; and a long nose, often with a slight downward curve. It is normally depicted as black, but may also have been reddish.

Gerard Butler said that as soon as he read the word 'God' in the script to describe his character, he knew would have to embark on a huge bodybuilding process. He said he started his work-outs immediately because he plays a God in the film and 'wanted to make sure he looked liked one by the time shooting began.'

In Egyptian mythology, Set or Seth (also spelled Setesh, Sutekh, Setekh, or Suty) is a god of the desert, storms, disorder, violence and foreigners in ancient Egyptian religion. In Ancient Greek, the god's name is given as Seth. Set is not, however, a god to be ignored or avoided; he has a positive role where he is employed by Ra on his solar boat to repel the serpent of Chaos Apep. Set had a vital role as a reconciled combatant. He was lord of the red (desert) land where he was the balance to Horus' role as lord of the black (soil) land.

Horus has both his eyes torn out, but has one restored to him. In Egyptian mythology he had only one eye torn out.

The Serpentine creature featured in the trailer is most likely Apep, also called Apophis, an Egyptian deity of chaos that is usually depicted as a snake in Egyptian art and hieroglyphs.
